Very important note for new visitors to the Yucatan: Bring pesos and ATM cards with a pin number so you can withdraw pesos from ATM machines (which offer the best exchange rate.) Do not bother with traveler's checks; very few places will take them and the lines at the banks where you can cash them are often very long. Some places may take credit cards, but many do not especially in Bacalar. There are ATM machines at the airport, Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Chetumal and Bacalar.

Bacalar is south of Cancun, about a four hour drive along the Riviera Maya. Chetumal, the capital of Quintana Roo, is 30 minutes to the south of Bacalar. The Belizean border is 20 minutes away, near Chetumal, with the Belize airport about an hour and a half further south. Cancun seems to be the airport destination of choice for most who come to Bacalar.

If you arrive early enough into Cancun, you can take a cab or the Cancun airport bus to Playa del Carmen and then a bus to Bacalar. Note that the first class bus (ADO) does not stop at Bacalar going south; it does stop on the way North. The second class bus (Mayab) is nearly as comfortable and slightly cheaper, but takes longer (it stops more places) and has no on-board facilities. It is usually possible to get off to use the bathroom at at least one or more of their frequent stops. You can check with the bus driver as to duration of the stop.

If you arrive in Cancun late in the day, there are a wide range of hotels to stay in Cancun, Puerto Morelos, or Playa del Carmen. You may want to rent a car, but it is not totally necessary.  When you get to Bacalar, you won't need one. Public transportation is easy to use, although a car gives you more flexibility. If you decide to rent a car, arrange the rental before coming to Mexico; this is usually less expensive.

Aviacsa and Mexicana now offer daily flights to the Chetumal airport from Mexico City. Usually, flying into Chetumal is more expensive than into Cancun, but it's considerably more convenient if you are just visiting Bacalar and not visiting Cancun, Puerto Morelos, Playa del Carmen, Tulum or other sites that lie between Cancun and Bacalar.

If you want to fly into the Belize City airport, there are also buses from there. (Private arrangements can be made for pickup in both Cancun and in Belize).
